So your team made the playoffs. That's good! Real good! Now let's see
if you can win the championship. Winning the championship is the only
thing that matters. Sure your league may pay out to some of the losers,
but the real pride comes from winning the championship. Holding the
trophy up at next year's draft and saying "Yeah, I'm the best! Come and
get some!" is what is it all about.
I like to think that any team that makes it to the playoffs can actually win the championship. You just need an edge.
So how do you give your team an edge?
Edge #1 - Pay attention to NFL division winners - Each year there are a
few teams that have clinched their playoff spots early. Coaches would
be stupid to continue to play their studs, when they actually have
nothing to gain. The Cowboys and the Packers come to mind his year. I
am not, however, advocating sitting any New England Patriot.
Championships are nice, but they have a chance at history. Expect these
guys to play at least 3 quarters each game until the end of the season
(unless of course they lose a game, then all bets are off).
Edge #2 - Watch for emerging players on crappy teams - Once teams have
lost their chance to make it to the playoffs, they start playing some
of their rookies or other undeveloped and untested players. These
players get a ton of wrap up time and as a result they put up some
decent numbers.
Edge #3 - Watch for key matchups - All year long, I advocate playing
your best players. Period! Do not pay attention to matchups; simply
play your STUDS. In the playoffs, I like to alter that strategy a bit.
I look at the matchups for my 3rd WR or RB and determine whether or not
I like the matchup better than my #2 WR/RB. For instance, in week 13, I
started Ernest Graham over Jamal Lewis. Clearly Lewis is a better RB,
but Graham had a better matchup in my opinion. Luckily, both players
had good games, so I did not have to second guess my decision, but this
edge has won me more championships than any other.
Edge #4 - Talk trash to your opponent - Hype their players! Talk to
them about matchups. Find the players you think will do the worst and
convince your opponent to start them. You will confuse them so much
that you may help them to make a few mistakes. That is my evil tip of
the week!
Using these techniques hopefully you will be able to dominate you fantasy football playoffs this season.
