Fantasy Football Stock Watch: Chris Chambers WR MIA
As far as 2006 fantasy busts were concerned, one of the headline
players on this list was Miami Dolphins WR Chris Chambers. After a
monstrous 2005 campaign that saw Chambers catch 82 passes with 11 TD's,
fantasy owners had to feel nothing but letdown by the pathetic 59
catches for 4 TD's he had in 2006. What went wrong? Was 2005 a mirage??
Or was last season simply a down year when everything seemed to be
going wrong in Miami. This is one of the biggest questions facing the
WR group in this year's drafts.
In order to answer these questions, lets first break down Chambers'
career numbers so that we can build a base of what we can realistically
expect this year. For starters, before his huge 2005, Chambers had
never topped 69 catches in a season, along with never having a season
of 1,000 receiving yards. Last season's 59 catches were terrible
compared to '06 but based on his career numbers, this was only a small
dip in production in that respect. Also the 1,118 receiving yards was
another statistical anamoly in that his previous career high was 963.
Yet more evidence of how fluky '06 was.
Now as far as the passing game itself is concerned, having Joey
Harrington as your QB as Chambers had last season will no doubt
negatively impact your numbers. To expand on this even further,
Chambers has never had a big time QB throwing passes to him in his
entire career as the Jay Fielders, AJ Feely's, and Gus Frerotte's were
the type of retread passers he had to deal with. Now 2007 brings
two-time Pro Bowler Trent Green who on paper is the best QB Chambers
has ever had. The only problem is that Green is a shadow of his former
self as age and injuries have robbed him of some of his ability. So
even though Green is clearly a better QB than Harrington, don't expect
this change to result in a huge upswing in receiving numbers.
All in all, Chris Chambers is not the number 1 receiver many touted him
to be after his breakout 2005. You must adhere to his career averages
in determining his worth and with that, Chambers is a decent number 2
wideout to have. I do believe he will put up better numbers than last
season, with a realistic expectation being 75 receptions with around 8
TD's(Chambers has usually had good scoring numbers so keep this is mind
those who are in TD-heavy leagues). So start looking Chambers'
direction around the 6th round of your draft and not any sooner. A
decent player to have but not the star he looked to once be.
