The fantasy football phenomenon

As most of us are either getting ready for the fantasy football playoffs or left just wondering where things took a wrong turn, I thought I would just think back a bit on when I got addicted to this fantasy world. I'm currently my 5th season in fantasy football and while I'm by no means an expert, I've been around long enough to have picked up a few tidbits of knowledge over the years. 5 seasons and I have 3 superbowl appearances with one championship, one last place finish and I'm currently in first place and in good shape for the playoffs. However, early success is not what keeps bringing me back to fantasy football. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy bragging rights as much as the next person, but I love this game because it has made me a better fan of football.

I know what's going through your mind.. everyone's a fan of football, right? It would almost be considered unpatriotic for someone to not be. As a die-hard 49er fan I've had my share of ups and downs (a lot of downs lately) and can spew off niner history with the best of 'em. However, when my brother got me into fantasy football 5 years ago I noticed how much of the game I was truely missing. My favorite quarterback? Joe Montana. My favorite wide reciever? Jerry Rice. My favorite runnningback? Roger Craig. Why? Mostly because they were 49ers. But playing fantasy football really opened my eyes to the rest of the league's players and not just the ones on my favorite team. The tanacious blocking of Hines Ward, the professionalism of players like Marvin Harrison and LT and even the end-zone antics of Chad Johnson all serve to grow my newfound appreciation for the game. Whereas before, if the 49ers weren't playing then I probably wasn't watching. Now I will watch the stinkers just to watch the players play thanks to fantasy football.
