The NFL Dallas Cowboys are a fan favorite within the
borders of Texas, and far beyond. For more than forty years the team
has performed at a consistently high level. In addition to their great
success on the field, “America’s Team” has been just as successful off
the field and is considered to be one of the most valuable sports teams
in North America. Behind every great sports franchise is an
identifiable symbol. The Dallas Cowboys are lucky to have two very
identifiable symbols – the world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and
the team’s mascot, Rowdy.
Rowdy became the official mascot of the
Dallas Cowboys in 1996 and is outfitted like a real cowboy, complete
with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He proudly wears the single star of
the Dallas Cowboys on his chest and sleeves. Rowdy’s main duty as the
team’s mascot is to create game day enthusiasm at Texas Stadium. To get
the fans pumped and involved in the game, Rowdy drives on his
four-wheeler, holds up signs that read “Let’s Go Cowboys” and has fun
tossing t-shirts into the stands for the fans to catch. He also has fun
at the games mocking the opponents. Rowdy participates in all Dallas
Cowboys home games and select away games. During the Dallas Cowboys
Training Camp Rowdy is in full attendance as host of Rowdy’s Kid Zone.
He plays with the kids at camp taking them through obstacle courses,
introducing them to the Cowboys experience (which consists of a
football toss, a field goal kick and more) and encouraging them to
chant for their favorite player.
The Dallas Cowboys are an
integral part of the community of Dallas and its surrounding area. The
Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are a common sight in the community raising
awareness for different causes. Rowdy himself, a readily identifiable
symbol of the Dallas Cowboys football team, is also happy to do his
part for the community. As part of the Cowboys community awareness,
Rowdy attends and participates in over 300 events a year. He
participates in events such as the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure,
the Salvation Army, and Special Olympics As well, he visits retirement
centers, hospitals, schools, birthday parties and grand openings. Rowdy
is a very visible part of the Dallas community.
Another very
important part of Rowdy’s duties is to attend the annual NFL Mascot
Convention. Held in a selected city each year, NFL mascots gather at a
convention to discuss and share ideas in regard to promoting mascot
awareness and mischievous mascot acts. Being good at what you do can
also have its rewards. In 1999 and 2001 Rowdy had the honor of being
selected as one of the top NFL mascots as he represented the Dallas
Cowboys at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. There he not only took
part in the NFL Pro Bowl game but was also involved in the Battle of
the Grid Iron, Special Olympics and much more.
It goes without
saying that Rowdy has quite the following and has been reproduced in a
number of ways. Rowdy’s likeness can be found as a plush figure or golf
club head cover. There’s also a Rowdy Christmas stocking and Rowdy wall
hooks to be had. These items and much more Dallas Cowboys memorabilia
can be found at Dallas-Cowboys-apparel.com.
Rowdy is a visible
symbol of Cowboys football. He helps bring enthusiasm and team spirit
to the game as well as highlighting events and helping efforts in his
community. There’s little doubt that with all the passion and
inspiration Rowdy brings to the field and the community that he is more
than living up to his name.
